Section LXXX-Galadriel’s Mirror

The water ripples and then stills...

Legolas...

The water ripples...

Merry and Pippin...

The water ripples...

Sam...

The water ripples...

I remember their faces, looking just like that, at the flet when first we entered Lothlórien. My heart weighs heavier within my chest. I remember Aragorn and Haldir arguing -- arguing about whether or not we could continue our journey -- because of the evil I carry...

The water ripples...

The Shire... green and lush and beautiful as ever, as though it is spring... or summer... the memory I hold in my heart...

The water ripples...

Hobbiton... or is it Bywater... the Green Dragon... so many nights spent there with Sam and Merry and Pippin and the Gaffer and even old Ted Sandyman...

The water ripples...

Burning... Hobbiton, Bywater burning... Hobbits killed by Orcs! It cannot be! I want to cry out, but I cannot utter a sound beyond gasps for breath. Nor may I tear my gaze away...

The water ripples...

Hobbits in shackles... Sam! Whipped... trudging to a mill... it is too large for the mill in Hobbiton...

The water ripples...

The Shire! Burned... trees gone... everything burned... grey... ash... the lush green gone... black... smoke rising from everywhere... dark...

The water ripples...

The Eye!! No! Calling to me! I see it! Clear, before me! Does it see me? I am safe nowhere from its searching gaze... It is pulling me closer... closer...

The Ring, it slips from the hiding place beneath my shirt... almost as though It is reaching for... reaching for... Its master...

No! My hand grasps It, tightly. I feel as though I am suddenly in a childhood game. The Eye pulling the Ring closer while I am pulling the Ring away...

Suddenly, I fall backward, yanked free of the terrible force...

I struggle to catch my breath and rise to my feet again, the Ring clutched tightly in my hand.
